G R E E K V I N E Y A R D MESENIKOLABLACK …RAREANDNICE The Venetians brought this rare red variety to Greece where it found friendly soi l. It is cultivated in three villages of the area of Kardit- sa, near Lake Plastiras (Meseniko- las, Moschato, Morfovouni). It has numerous virtues: attractive dark colour, intense aroma of red and black fruits, soft tannins and well-ba lanced mouth feel. It is one of those wines worth following because it represents a well-hid- den vinic treasure. Tips Best served at 18 °C. Perfect when paired with pies, meatba lls and spicy cheeses. MAVRODAPHNE …REDFOUNTAINOFSCENTS They are aromatic varieties and were introduced to Greek vineyards some 150 years ago by Gustav Clauss. They had a sweet start in Patras, the northwest Peloponnese and the is- land of Cepha lonia. Those wines with high sugar concentration and of medium a lcohol content quickly reached the top of the vinic ladder both in Greece and abroad. Despite its huge success, Mavrodaphne left its sweet sanctuary to test itself at dry wines in the two areas where it participates in Appellation of Ori- gin of High Qua lity wines. The out- come is a new vinic proposa l that deserves our attention. Their colour is of an attractive deep shade and their aromas are dense and complex. The scents of red fruits, mainly plums and raisins, spices, chocolate and vani lla are easi ly noticeable. The mouth feel is equa lly dense, robust and complex. Tips Dry Mavrodaphne is best served at 18-22 °C whi le you can surely try the sweet one chi lled. Many dishes are enhanced by its qua lities like pork with plums for instance or var- ious chocolate-based pastries. MAVROTRAGANO …CRISPYFLAVOURFROMSANTORINI Mavrotragano is a product of the unique soi l of Santorini. Its name comes from its black and crispy grapes. After many years of partic- ipating in the production of wines of Santorini, some persistent wine pro- ducers of the island helped it take centre stage. Despite sma ll-sca le production, the wine has a ll the qua lities of a great red. The nose combines exotic fruits with earthly and minera l notes. The mouth feel is dominated by flowers, tobacco, cof- fee and sweet fruits. Its dense and deep colour meets high a lcohol con- tent, low acidity and rich tannins. Tasting dry red wines of this variety is a lways a pleasure and offers an escape from the ordinary. Tips Best served at 8-10 °C. Without a doubt, it has great ageing potentia l and we sti ll do not know how far it can go. It can certainly age for at least five years. Projecten_Layout 1 10/25/2012 4:55 PM Page 13
