G R E E K V I N E Y A R D KIDONITSA …SWEETWHITEQUINCE Obviously, its name derives from the Greek word Κυδώνι / Kidoni / “quince”. If you are a friend of quince, you wi ll love Kidonitsa, a variety that sees the quince leading its aromatic pa lette. Sti ll, there are more rea- sons for you to experience this, until recently disappeared, white variety. It has a sweet and fresh taste, a mouth feel of unique texture, vol- ume and harmony. Fortunately, the wine producers of the area of Spar- ta (Lakonia) in the Peloponnese ma- naged to revive it and grow it in exclusive vineyards of the area. This Spartan variety paid them off and it seems that it has a lot more to show and to offer to the world of wine. For now, try it a lone in dry white or rosé wines or in the famous Protect- ed Denomination of Origin Monemva- sia wines where it a lso has a sma ll but noticeable contribution. Tips Best served at 12-14 °C. It pairs nicely with Melih loro cheese from the island of Limnos and of course with a ll traditiona l fruit preserves. The idea l time to open the bottle is at its youth or (should you choose to experiment) at the 3rd or 5th year of ageing. LAGORTHI …wHITEFRESHNESS There are far too many reasons for Lagorthi to become our summer wine and to find itself in our glass- es throughout the winter. The white wine, rooted in Ka lavrita, Patras and the northern Peloponnese, is the answer to those who are looking for vivid, sharp wines. It is characterised by elegance, finesse and youthful- ness due to its high acidity. Its freshness combined with low a lco- hol content makes it even easier to drink. However, it has a delicate nose of citrus fruits, citron, lemon and touches of minera ls. The taste of every drop rejuvenates and re- freshes the senses. Lagorthi gives single varieta l dry white wines or blends with other varieties like Roditis. Tips Enjoy this refreshing variety at 10- 12 °C with oysters or fruits. Its acidity compels us to try it whi le young. However, it can be preserved for 2-3 years. LIMNIO …REDSILK The name revea ls that this red vari- ety comes from the island of Lim- nos, but it fails to revea l a ll of its secrets. It started in Limnos and then travelled to northern Greece where it starred as a synonym for high qua lity and supremacy. Limnio is a soft power with si lky tannins that caress the pa late and many engaging scents of forest fruits and heady herbs. For those who do not wish to try a harsh and rustic red wine, Limnio is the best, most origi- na l and different proposa l, a high qua lity, light and soft red wine. It comes as no surprise that more and more wine producers have begun bottling it a lone or blending it with numerous high status internationa l or loca l varieties. Tips Best served at 16-18 °C, it can be even paired with fish. Interesting when consumed fresh, it can sti ll hold on to its charms even after 5 years. Projecten_Layout 1 10/25/2012 4:55 PM Page 9
